It’s something in the way he speaks: the tone, the inflection, the lilt of a word or sentence. Subtle things that don't surface when they talk to the cops or the back-alley thugs or the women who point them to the night's criminal hotspots, but when he speaks to the men who sell themselves to other men. A cipher, of sorts, for those used to keeping a piece of themselves hidden.
“Calm down, just tell me what happened,” he says. “We can help you.”
There are worlds between us, he is saying, but in one aspect we are the same. You can trust me. I understand.
(And why Rorschach understands this language, designed to be invisible to outsiders looking in-it is not something he allows himself to dwell on.)
