Connor and Feynriel are both outcasts in a way, so it makes sense that they'd be able to connect once they've met.
I like your descriptions, and I think the present tense works well here.
Last but not the least, I like that you tied DA:O and DA2 events also by mentioning the larger political changes in Ferelden.

My choice in using present tense usually comes down to what my brain spits out, but sometimes (like here) it's because getting lost in WHEN things are happening actually makes sense and adds to the feel of it. It wouldn't have been quite as surreal in the Fade with a past-tense narrator, I think, and I'm glad you liked it - I know it can be strange to read.
And thank you! I didn't linger on it as much as I would have liked, since Connor was... distracted. But I doubt the templars would have said anything aloud, for fear of spreading dissent into their particular Circle. Connor didn't see much of it, but I expect restrictions were increased (though not to Gallows-levels) and lessons became... less helpful, so that the apprentices couldn't fight back as much if the time came.
I'm so glad you enjoyed and thank you for the thoughtful review!
