Don't write the house off just yet. I understand the possibility for which you're preparing yourself, but the house in which I was born, which is nothing special, is still amazingly, inexplicably standing after Camille and every hurricane since.
I understand the sense of connection. My great grandparents' house is gone to some other family, and I still mourn it's going. I've had that fantasy of getting it back.

I do understand what you're going through, though. I always wanted to live in my grandfather's old house. It was a very important part of my childhood, but it ended up being torn down (for a post office :P).
I will pray that the house will ride out the storm. Maybe it will surprsie you.
