I have a very fond, and clear, memory of seeing Poltergeist in the theater when it came out - I was 13 or 14 and it made a very big impact on me. so so hard to believe it's been 30 years! but I sat right in the front row and I loved that movie. Close Encounters and ET also are two of my favorites, along with of course Jaws. those movies from the late '70s and '80s are classics.

ooh I have to visit that cemetery! I find cemeteries very peaceful and beautiful places.

I know people speak of the "Poltergeist" curse, not just poor Heather getting so sick so young, but the brutal way the talented, bright, and beautiful young Dominique Dunne was killed by the bare hands of the man that was suppose to love her the most, her boyfriend. For these reasons, I have a hard time getting into the movie because I can't divorce myself from the emotions I feel when I see those beautiful young actresses on screen. That might sound corny, but it's true. I don't think I have sat through it from start to finish since I was little for the reasons I expressed.

As for you Xim, I am so jealous you got to pay your respect to Marilyn. I would love to do that. Was it before or after Domaggio died?? Cuz he sent roses to crypt every week after she passed. And refused to ever discuss her or give an interview about her. Ver respectful, loving, and classy. As you know Xim, I am a huge Marilyn fan. If I had the money, I would do what Hugh Hefner did and get a crypt next to hers. ;)

I can understand your feelings about not being able to enjoy Poltergeist for the reasons you stated. Unfortunately there are many examples where an actor or well-known crew member died during or after completion of a film. The same could be said for music and the other arts. I can't listen to Nirvana any more after what Kurt did, but I enjoy John Lennon's music even more although he was taken from us very tragically at a young age. I won't get into a list of the many other examples of this that I can think of off the top of my head. Luckily the so-called Poltergeist curse didn't affect any other of the people involved in the production, and what we are left with is more of a sad coincidence that two talented young people died before living full lives and being able to continue to develop their talents. But since we are on the subject I will throw out a question to our readers: does the tragic death of an artist give more weight to the art they produced in their lifetime? Does knowing the kind life that VanGogh lived make us appreciate ( ... )

Just thought I'd get that out of the way so people won't think I've gone daft and started talking to myself ( ... )

Crimes and Misdemeanors cinematixyz January 14 2012, 14:27:50 UTC
I don't want to get into a debate on the subjects we touched upon above, this is a film blog after all. But I was reminded of one of my favorite films that deals with the mysteries of life and death. It is a movie that has one of the most realistic portrayals of plot and character arc I have seen in a popular entertainment: Woody Allen's CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS. If our readers have not seen this film, which is bitingly funny and refuses to tie up the plot in a typical Hollywood fashion, I recommend you check it out. Two characters in the film even talk about the difference in a story being true-to-life, and it being fictionalized. One of Woody's best and one of my personal favorites that will entertain and spark food for thought in movie-lovers who appreciate being challenged and stimulated.

It's really tragic what happened to those 2 actresses. I haven't seen this film in eons..i saw it in a drive-in long while back, i also saw the sequels. One of my all-time fav. 80s horror, even though its considered a bit on the cheesy side, is "Blood Beach", and the actor in it died tragically, i don't know if anyone knows this story, but its really sad how he was knifed to death coz he chased after a robber. :(
