Z is for Zombie, and that's good enough for me.

While normally, Z would be for Zu, in this case it isn't.

This time, it's for Zombieland.  This is a film I've been wanting to see for quite some time.  Now, just so you're aware, this review will have some spoilers.  If you have not seen it, DO NOT ( CLICK HERE. )

I too saw "Zombieland" and was not looking forward to it. It is not a genre I enjoy (the Zombie film) and have only sat through them when I was outvoted or happened to be dragged along. But going into Zombieland expecting to hate it, I was glad it was better than I expected. That being said, I hate that male actor playing "Columbus" he is not cute, funny, or in any way a positive neurotic hero (which we know exists from seeing "Annie Hall".) I also did not care if the female lead got killed by Zombies AT ALL. You call this character 'callous', but I think she was unlikable, bitchy and out and out stupid (as in her more than stupid actions at the movie's climax). It's hard to say "It was better than I thought it would be" when you hate the 2 leads, but as you pointed out, this film's saving grace was indeed Woody's role are "Tallehassee". Wow. Normally I do not root for the rogue and find this kinda "Kickin' Ass and Taking Names" pat character common and boring. But I would sit through it again purely to see that guy do exactly that... I'm probably a bit of a hypocrite, because I love Zombie/Horror films, but I hate the violence/gore that often goes with them. I loved 28 Days Later because it wasn't gratuitous (unlike the sequel), and the visual ambiance was filled with shadows so you didn't see as much anyway.

But I digress. It took me til a few weeks ago to watch a TV edit of Zombieland, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. True, the romance was flawed, but it also wasn't pushed to be as big a part of the movie as it could have been. It was a lot funnier than I expected, and I generally agree with your assessment of Eisenberg (though Cera's Scott Pilgrim remains a personal fave of the neurotic po-mo roles). It didn't entirely satisfy at the end, though, with no real sense of closure as to what their future in Zombieland holds, aside from avoiding getting bit/eaten/etc. That could have been improved upon for me.

You're not a hypocrite. cinematixyz December 14 2011, 19:36:47 UTC
Because two on our team (Xim and Yearrghsworth) are peaceful pacifists that LOVE the Horror genre, and Y has a special fondness for the Zombie flick.

I am the only one of the 4 of us that doesn't like or enjoy the genre at all so it takes a really special film for me to enjoy, and this one was alot better than I thought. Like I said earlier, I wasn't too fond of the two lead,s but the writing was good and Woody Harrelson saved it IMHO. =)
