I was fairly resistant too seeing this movie, but I ended up loving it. It reminded me a lot of the Arthur C. Clarke story The Star.

I saw this at a theater and was just swept away by it. I don't buy many movies but I have this.

See, here is where we differ. I LOVE Darren and Pi and Requiem. So when I saw the trailers for the fountain, I thought "This is SOO up my alley!!"

Yet for some reason that I can't even explain, I DIDN'T like it. It's like a soup that has all my fave ingredients in it, but I didn't like it. I have no reasons and I can't even remember what bothered me so. I just remember wanting to see it for like a year...and when I finally did, saying 'I never want to see that again'.

Maybe I built it up too much, I don't know, or after 'Pi' and 'Requiem', I expected too much. I don't know, I was just not into it. And when people hear that they are like 'WHAT?!? We thought of you when -WE- saw it!!'

Anyhow.. this review makes me want to give it another go though, maybe without putting it on a pedestal BEFORE seeing it. Perhaps -I- was the problem, you know??

I know the nebulous way the plot was handled turned a LOT of people off, but that sort of thing appeals to me, leaving it open to interpretation. But you really should revisit it. Sometimes we are not in a headspace to enjoy a movie the first time we see it. Case in point - I really didn't get/like Moulin Rouge when I first saw it, but it really grew on me. Same with A Knights Tale (I hated the anachronism), but I have watched it enough to quote it.

But yes, expectation can really skew your enjoyment, which is why I try not to anticipate movies much :)

Well if you suggest it, I should try it again. I will let you know when I do, R. Thanks for the second look ;)

This is one of my all-time favourite movies. I particularly love the third story (even though people probably think I should be in love with the Mayan story), because of the Goddess representation in the form of the tree, and the sacrificial God doing what he knows he must to reunite with her.
