I did too, which people that know me find strange. I am not a prude, by ANY means, but I like my smut classy, if that makes sense. Very Dita Von Teese rather than Traci Lords, if that makes sense. (though in my graver/trolling days, I really dug on Lords of Acid...it was the 90s, I was a teenager, and acid was EVERYWHERE, so sue me.. LOL ( ... )

I remember enjoying this one, particularly (and to my surprise) Courtney Love's performance. Such a wonderful surprise.

In the late 90's and early 00's, my husband and I had a film-watching project where we were going year by year and watching everything nominated for 12 of the Oscar categories (including all the acting, writing, cinematography, etc). We'd try to stay current, and when we caught up, we'd start working backward. (Just for fun, we did some years from the 80's, too). My husband dragged his feet so hard on the 1997 Oscars because he did not want to see The People vs. Larry Flynt. He despises the real Larry Flynt too much, I guess. I tried to convince him it was great, but then we couldn't find a copy of Secrets and Lies (even on VHS!), so decided to skip the year for the time being ( ... )

I love it. My ex roommate and I had a project in 2001, I got the AFI top 100 list, I checked off every film I had seen, he checked everyone he had seen, and what was left was either a film he hadn't seen, I hadn't, or neither had.

At first it was easy...but those last 15 films were sooooo hard to find. We went to every library, every sale, everywhere to find the difficult ones (battleship Potemkin, birth of a nation) but now I can honestly say, i have seen every film on the AFI 100 best list. Before 2027, Y and I are going to do the same but for Oscar winners starting with Wings. That way for the 100th anniversary, I will have seen every Academy Award winner as well....which might me difficult. I hated 'Out of Africa'. LOL

Yes!!! Our AFI progress list was on our fridge for years, but we never got all the way through it. (And then, of course, they put out a revised list.) Lawrence of Arabia puts me to sleep EVERY time. I have sincerely tried -- that is one I simply cannot do. We saw some great ones for the first time though. I ended up loving Sunset Boulevard, All About Eve, and On the Waterfront. Some of the others didn't age well though, most notably The Graduate. That one did nothing for me.

Anyway, nice work finishing that list. My SIL did it (both the original and revised top 100) and it sounded like quite an undertaking. (I know I'm missing at least 30-40.)

That sounds like another great project for you and Y, working through those Oscar winners! I look forward to hearing about your progress with that. (I'll have to tell my husband about it, too -- maybe we'll join you! 2027 seems like a reasonable deadline.)

I hate Lawrence of Arabia too, so don't worry... cinematixyz June 25 2013, 22:07:51 UTC
I do love the Graduate, but I am a romantic (and have scribbled my lovers name over and over and over again when heartbroken) and love Simon and Garfunkle, so...They had me at "And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson.."

Yeah, when I told Y. about what you guys did he was excited, like, let's start NOW. So we may print out the list and starting with Wings to Life of Pi (I think) go through and slowly see them all sooner than later. Then I can say 'I have seen all the AFI 100 AND all Oscar winners'.
