I think this review fairly accurately describes what I thought of it. I thought the first part of the movie was terribly cliche but once past the set up, there was some real emotional depth.
I didn't weep watching this film until I got to the barbed wire scene (which you may have skipped) - that left me sobbing.
But I was overall dissatisfied with the movie, it was beautiful, wonderful sweeping shots and gorgeous cast, but it just felt hollow to me. The concept horrified me, the awareness of how these horses suffered left me feeling sick inside but the story of this movie - it was too episodic. Too many vignettes of people falling worshipfully in love with the horse after 10 minutes (I know I'm supposed to infer all the stuff we didn't see, but for me it would have been more powerful to have fewer people and greater depth.)
I think it was the 'children's book) source showing through.
It's strange. Beautiful film, scenes that left me weeping (and I had to pause the barbed wire scene because it was unbearable) but left me unsatisfied.(And compelled to warn all my animal loving friends to watch with caution - absolutely not one for the kids!)
Monkeys/Horses/Dogs, get it?cinematixyzAugust 21 2012, 16:49:39 UTC
No, he unpaused at the 'wire' scene, knowing the ending and knowing I would infer it was the "Christmas meeting of the two sides to put down their guns".
I did keep saying "Are they gonna hurt Joey" about 30 times, literally. But it was when Albert and Joey were separated at the start of the Great War that I went NUTS. My partner says I cried (the heaving, non talking brand) about 15-20 then he had to spend another 15-20 minutes going through and reading the plot for me and then talking me into going on..
Beautiful, Gorgeous, Sweeping, and out and out too Emotional for me to see again.
But since we reacted similar ways (mine maybe more hardcore that yours, let me end with this to cheer you up)
Did you Salute?!?cinematixyzAugust 21 2012, 21:46:34 UTC
Not just any doggy. He has the same rank as my father. And was a Hero. Makes me feel good to think of him or look at his picture or read about him =)
I'd watch a 'Wardog' movie about him knowing the ending.
I don't know why Xim seems to think I am so gung-ho AGAINST spoilers. Sometimes, if I am a season behind, I will say "OK, I am a season behind you so don't tell me anything more", but usually, I wanna know what's coming up.
I am very sensitive to love, animal, family, and death. Yet I love history and drama ::shrug:: Go Fig. At least with history, I know how it ends, maybe that's why it's my fave.
But yeah, SARGENT STUBBY saved many American, English, and French lives. ::salutes::
