Mothers in Film....

Happy Mother's Day. There are a lot of different portrayals of mothers in films and I did some soul searching to think about what film best told my story. To do this I have to give away my gender, which is unquestionably female. So is my story 'The Joy Luck Club', 'Mildred Pierce', or 'Terms of Endearment'? Was it more 'Mommie Dearest' or Albert ( Read more... )

my childhood was so surreal and downright criminal (involving an incestuous child raper who got his own sister pregnant then blew his brains out in a field while on leave from the army. more sexual and physical assault and a drug dealer for a father who disappeared so it's rather challenging to see everyone in a better light or as having done ' the best they could' or excusing large portions of the mess that went on-it was more get out alive if you can and don't look back or you'll get sucked into the vortex again.) it's hard to find parallels- or to care to. i certainly understand it all now- and better understand those involved and the whys of their and my behaviors- but that doesn't make it any more digestible ( ... )

My movie would be Real Women Have Curves. My mom is so much like the mom in the movie and I am like the youngest daughter. I didn't look up character names and for that I am sorry. I just wanted to leave my thought before I forget about them. I don't have the best relationship with my mom, but I love her none the less. She did the best with what was given and that's all I can ask for.

that's a good question - I can't think of any movies that would represent my relationship with my mom. we've always been close, so something like Steel Magnolias, or Terms of Endearment. we do fight a bit, so maybe Terms of Endearment is similar.

happy mum's day!

As long as it's not an illness or death that's needed before you and your mother can be close(r). In both those films...well....you know how they end ;)

haha yes I thought about that. My mom and I are close without illness or death - but sometimes we need more distance. we're living together now and it's stressful sometimes. I can't think of a film that shows a good relationship between mom and daughter that's not strained.

there must be something!

I would have too, fifteen years ago. I am an introvert and my mother is an EXTREME extrovert with all these 'friends' circling at all times and I LOATHED it. So whenever she'd ask something to the effect of 'where my disdain or disrespect came', it gave me the -perfect- opening to scream "I am NOT one of your FANS!!!!!!!!!"

She never got it, but it was a fulfilling thing for a teenager to scream, believe you me ;)

I don't know about a film that best represents our relationship, but my mom's favorite movie was Purple Rain, so I can't think about Prince without thinking about her and how awesome she was.

Aw....so sorry to hear it, because now I know what your father must have been like. Big hugs and a kiss on the forehead.

Heh. He wasn't the best guy, but not as bad as the dad in the movie. Thanks.
