Last night, I came to terms with my loss and bought a booklet of fare savers. While it beats paying for individual fares each and every time I go somewhere, it's nowhere near as cheap or liberating as having a bus pass in your pocket. Having a bus pass means never having to think twice about traveling anywhere--it's a sunk cost, so taking the bus ( Read more... )

so taking the bus to the buy-low three stops away is economically and psychologically the same as taking the skytrain downtown to work.

I totally agree. When you have to pay a fare each time, you have to think, "Is it worth the money, or should I walk?" Having a pass is such FREEDOM. You don't have to think twice whether or not you can afford to go out. If you don't have a pass and you have been out and about all day, and then an opportunity to go out in the evening comes up, you think, "Damn, I wish I had bought a day pass", especially if you have to travel multiple zones.

I love having a UPass. Love it. (Sorry, I don't mean to rub it in your face..)

S'okay. In university, I'd have loved having a UPass, too.

This is why my pass lives in my wallet.

And my wallet stays chained to a belt loop.

Yeah, but I've always kept my bus pass separate from my wallet, out of fear of pickpockets. And a chain is too heavy for my tiny body. So, I'm bulking the thing up.

Some kind of tether is helpful. You can use a cord instead of a chain, and you can tether just the pass if need be.

I'm not as concerned about pickpockets myself, given that the way my pockets lie, it's hard for ME to get my wallet out.

Inside jacket pockets also work.

But yeah, tethers
