If your Dad doesn't need to take his money out right away post-retirement then he should be fine. My mutual fund/stock investments took a big hit in the past six months too - but once the markets turn around it'll be fine. You're only losing money if you take it out right now.

Yeah, but he still can't retire just yet, unless you can give us an exact date for when the markets will turn around. Imagine being 65, being told all your life that 65 was when you were gonna retire, and not being able to call it a day. :/

I agree with Tim. The market will turn around and things will shoot back up where they were, if not higher, within a few years.

His RRSP doesn't need to be converted to a RRIF until he's 72, which is something.

I can empathize with this. I'm only 30 and mine are bad to begin with. I've been known to somehow magically sprain and blow my knee for a couple days simply by walking to the bathroom.
