Success... sort of *shrugs*

The computer is up and running and we have sound. Everything seems to be working fine (except that little issue of having to chose which OS to use when the computer starts up). It is running much faster than it was (6.57 GB Used, 30.6 GB Free Space ( Read more... )

My work computer has that thing with the OS choice when it starts up too! I've tried to get rid of it 815 times, but have had no success...

Have a look down the page. I posted instructions to cindy that should take care of your boot menu problems.

Um...how much space you have used on your harddrive has nothing to do with how fast your computer is.

Well, unless we're talking extreme cases with an old O(n^2) file system (i.e. FAT which was used for windows 98) and millions of empty or nearly empty files. In that case you might get some disk access slow-down but these cases are rare.

I would say if you notice an increase in speed it's because you're not running as much in the background anymore, or your OS memory footprint is smaller because you have fewer drivers or services running.

Besides that emptying your harddisk shouldn't affect performance.

Anyway, sorry to get technical on you there...I just find that myth particularly irritating.

I do know how much space on HD does not = speed, but the less stuff you have going on the background does. Semi technical doesn't bother me until you start string all the numbers together and it sounds like your speaking in math. lol ( ... )

I haven't done much tech support work since I did it full time 3 years ago, and since I've been buried in code since then, normal human vocabulary regarding computers is not exactly my area of expertise, but I'll give it a go ( ... )

Thanks Andy!! I will give it a go when I get home. It seems pretty straight forward.
