Doesn't sound like a hugely scientific process, really. ;-)

The whole question is an interesting one, though. Does a writer always write the same way?

So let me ask you -- what do you think is your most characteristic piece of writing? That could be thematic, or it could be stylistic...

Oh, tough question. I'd say stylistically I've definitely changed over time. I used to be fond of writing long, plotty stuff, but I've been struggling to finish my last WIP for a couple of years (!) now. I definitely view the short story as more my thing these days.

Recently, soundingsea said that she should have known the fic I wrote for remix was one of my stories (she'd read and commented on it when we were still anonymous) because it was very "me." I'm not sure what "me" is, but I think that story would probably be characteristic of my current writing style.

Looking at the recent fic I've written, I'd say thematically that I like to write about people who discover something surprising about themselves or someone they love over the course of the story. It wasn't a conscious though to write about that - I only realized it when I went back to look. So thank you for that moment of self-discovery. :-)

ETA: I'd love to hear your answer to the same question.
