Broadband

Something I've suspected and just confirmed. As great as DSL is, it's not standardized like cable internet is.

That is, you can't just go down to your local Circuit City and buy an off the shelf DSL modem, take it home and connect it up like you can a cable modem.

That said, no one sells DSL modems except for such rare cases as I found a modem that ( Read more... )

A while back I got into a discussion on Usenet regarding some words that were often misuded outside their proper technical context, making the point that my managers and team leaders often used the term "bandwidth" to mean "time available to do x". Someone else observed "broadband" being similarly misused, to which I responded that I wasn't sure the term really meant anything ouside of its technical meaning.

A Canadian correspondent came back with "Hole is my favourite broadband?" in response. gmjambear would substitute the Go-Go's for Hole in that expression though. ;-)

Yeah, I can understand how "bandwidth" could be misused or worse, mis-interpreted.

While even though it's not about "time" per se, it does have a corolation in that it takes less time to get something off the 'net with broadband than with dialup. Outside of that, you are right though.
