I put in for maternity leave the other day - my (female) supervisor (who hasn't had kids) has to sign it. I decided to go for the year, as I'm not sure how I will be feeling when bub is born, and as a PhD student I'm entitled to it. That's bullshit, if only because you are not person X who took six months off. You are Carol who needs more time for any number of PRIVATE reasons that the university should take into account. If you can take a year off, do it. Fuck them.

I am having so many second thoughts about my current boyfriend of ten months atm. Yesterday at a party he tried to tell me that feminism was unnecessary and now men were being oppressed. I was so furious I couldn't even respond. Feminism is so necessary. Instituitonalised gender imbalance is rife. It's insidious and built into the very fabric of our society.
