Actually, I've been re-reading Manna Francis's The Administration in bits and pieces, Which made me think about the lads as Bodie-Toreth and Doyle-Warrick.
Don't get me wrong; they're not identical. I don't think Bodie is a sociopath by any means, LOL, but I do very much think he's got a violent side creeping just underneath the surface. Doyle and Warrick do have internal conflicts over good and evil. And it would be hard to pull off, but I could see the bdsm angle in the right hands.
There'd have to be some rearranging, but there are similarities there.
I don't know The Administration at all... Though you've raised an interesting characterisation point (did we ever do that post?!) - to be honest it's never Bodie that I see as the one with a violent side creeping under the surface! Doyle's the one who seems to react violently to things, Bodie's more philosophical... though he obviously does react with violence sometimes, it always seems more controlled to me... But I'm saying that without knowing the characters you're comparing with at all, so...
Hmmn - I wonder if I've pictured B/D as other characters lately... now and then I do, if I'm watching or reading something very cool... I'll have to try and remember! *g*
A much more concise summary! *g* Which is not to say that Bodie won't be violent when he wants to be - as his actions in the betting shop in Runner, and in Close Quarters show, for instance - but he's thinking when he does those things, albeit misguidedly! I can see Doyle exploding into uncontrolled violence more easily somehow... maybe in the way he held Benny over the wall in Involvement, and often punches something to express anger...
I've literally just finished Jack Reuben Darcy's The Tangled Web. A second reading, this is a Pros/Chief crossover but without anyone having to die - or at least actually die
( ... )
Ah, I like tTangled Web alot. I have to stop myself wincing at the American parts (it's more than just spellings!), but the actual story keeps me going. It does seem odd that Bodie doesn't recognise Doyle straight away, but there've been years in between, and we do tend to believe in what we see and are told above everything else, so I can go with it. In what way did you feel Alan's daughter was left hanging, though? I think Doyle made a conscious decision not to tell her (or anyone else) that he wasn't Cade, and surely telling her would hurt her more...? Doyle effectively is Cade, as he realises by the end of the story, so...? That said, it's been a whilst since I read it, so perhaps there was a hint that he would tell her that's left for their future...?
I was brought up (and clearly VERY influenced by) "if you tell one lie, you have to tell another seven". I am absolutely convinced that Doyle will be found out in his lie simply because two other people know - it will get out eventually and this leaves me feeling that Elena will be far more hurt because her trust will have been compromised. Having said that, I don't think the story needs anything else - it's just my own personal code which is hardly relevant here! Doyle is Cade and there really is no going back. The problem of course is, what if the wife turns up? I doubt Doyle will be able to fool her ...
Thanks for your response, it made me verbalise (on paper) why I have the niggle about Elena.
I just finished "Choosing" by Kate Maclean, and liked it (especially the hint at a possible, though unfulfilled, B/C bond). Others were from gen authors, like "Jaicen" and "CI5mates", which I enjoyed very much for their sense of action ans suspense.
We never discussed a B/C fic yet since, when it was planned, I had to renounce because of an overload of assignments at the time.
I like Choosing alot - anything by Kate MacLean in fact! Not so much any B/C hinting of course (which I'm not sure I even caught a glimpse of!)... *g*
We haven't had a B/C theme yet, because it's not been proposed when I've asked for suggestions! It can be though, if you'd like to. We've got Flying Lads up next, then Lads in the Water, but that's as far as the schedule went - so B/C could come after that.
I just finished the story and I can assure you the hint is very loud indeed! But it's not about an actual bond between B and C (other than affection and respect) for Bodie is unaware of Cowley's feelings till the moment when the older man let him see them, quite deliberately, at the end of the first part, a move that is repeated at the end of the second part. And, well, Doyle is so odious in that story, even at the (supposed to be positive?) outcome that, hadn't I already been acquired to the B/C pairing, I would have wished that Bodie had done another choice.
I remember there was a B/C discussion planned (in the larger theme "other pairings") which I was obliged to forsake because of other prevailing obligations. I'd like to take a turn at the reading room but I'm expecting a surgery in May or June (nothing very serious, cataract), which could hinder my intervention again. i'll know the date in ten days.
Rats about your surgery - hope it goes well, and that it doesn't slow you down for long! I remember the B/D discussion you were going to host, and that you had to postpone it. Let's hold off on doing a B/C theme for Reading Room until you're properly free again though, because I know that although other people would hopefully lead reviews about B/C stories too, as part of a series, you'd like to be involved.
I went and checked Choosing, and you're right, there's a strong hint of a B/C possibility, and I did know it was there, but it's so one-sided that I suppose I never think of it as actual B/C content! And of course we have totally opposites hopes for the lads... *g*
You do use strong words when it comes to being negative about Doyle though - odious?! He doesn't behave well it's true, but that's why I like MacLean's writing, because she always shows us why someone hasn't behaved well, or that actually it only looks bad when seen from one particular perspective. Bodie's behaviour is questionable too, in different ways, I'd say
( ... )
There's at least one other on the CD, in which Bodie and Doyle are on a plane which is taken over by hijackers who decide that the way to keep order on the plane is to have one of them (I forget which) have sex with random girl on the plane. I don't think it's online, and I don't think the author's name is either, and that's all I remember, which is not helpful, I know!
That story on the CD sounds familiar (though I might have read it in a zine), though I'm not entirely sure I finished it... can't for the life of me remember title or author though... ah, did a search of the files, and eventually found it! It's simply called Hijacked, and should be found by doing a Cntl+F of the index (I won't give the author's name on here, since I don't know whether it's a pseud or not). I'll add it to the list, it could at least provoke some discussion, if someone decides to review it!
