the site is sort of focused on apple computers, but i think the problem is everywhere. to be honest i didn't really know that this problem existed. i mean i know for a fact that i just dumped old computers in the trash thinking nothing of it. i'm sort of scared and concerned about the inplications of this waste. immediate and long-term.
ok well according to the apple website they offer services for recycling their computers, but only through shipment. you cant drop it off at the store ... i think that the website is fair in asking that apple accept old computers at the store. i mean people buy it from there. why can't they send it back to be recycled? ... to apple's credit they seem to be taking steps. now i'm not sure about other computer companies .... i doubt it considering how much of a price war it is with PC makers.
WPI keeps parts and machines in use here on campus until they pass their period of usefullness. Once that happens we start building a pile of machines down here in the shop. Every once in a while we have about 60 or 70 machines that either get donated to middle schools and such or sold en masse to some company who specializes in ditching these things.
