They've been to Portland twice since we moved here. So we've done the Japanese and Chinese Gardens, the Zoo, the waterfalls in the Gorge, and Astoria. They are staying 10 days, so we thought we'd take a 1-2 day jaunt outside the city too.
That gets to be more tricky. I'm a fan of Shore Acres down near Coos Bay, but that's 3.5 hours away, each way. You also have Crater Lake, and if you want a long drive, the Oregon Caves. Hmm, I just made a loop... Shore Acres near North Bend/Coos Bay, Rainbow Rock in Brookings, swing up to Cave Junction to the Oregon Caves, and then up to Crater lake. Then driving up the other side of Mount Hood from Bend. There is a possible detour from the trip to Ashland for the very good Oregon Shakespeare Festal.
Amusing side note: when I saw Walla Walla, I immediately 'read' it to be Wasilla and you were going to take them on a road trip/sideshow to the former-GOP-Ghoddess Palin-land retreat. :)
Personally I like the Hood River area, up the Gorge a ways. Quaint towns, loads of fun shops, museums/galleries, and really polite nice people.
