so, my little girl is turning 5 this year. it'll also be the first time she's celebrated her birthday in Japan! living in Fukuoka without any relatives or friends for that matter makes it a wee bit hard to throw a party of any kind. my in-laws live in Yokohama, and they're also in their 70's, so it's not like they could come all the way out here

On a personal note, I understand about not having family close. Plus the Japanese are not really into big birthday party celebrations anyway. So, that's why we always make our birthdays just a quiet little family thing. Still special though. Just different living in Japan, so I know what you mean totally.
