I said it almost couldn't have been better, because two of our friends were planning to come. They are members of Dan's church and also our good friends - we were all surprised when we found out we were getting married at their church.
But they got in a car accident on the way to pick us up! Thank God everybody is fine, but they had to sit in the police station for 6 hours filling out paperwork, which meant they couldn't come to the ceremony. :~(
Congratulations! I also got married under a tree outside (though our kissing was perfectly legal). I could not imagine getting married under a ROOF and liking it! Though we had twice the number attending our wedding, 4. :)
The pastor was asking us, would we rather conduct the ceremony in that office with the big round desk, or in the assembly hall where all the kids toys are? Here with the big oak desk? Out there where the play group was held earlier?
We just looked at each other and said, "How about out front where that fig tree is?" And it was perfect! Pastor Dan even said he might turn it into a small chapel.
I just dug out my snapshots, and I don't have a good picture of it. It might have to do with the ceremony being at midnight. We wanted to be married on May 1 (Beltaine), and our friend who was marrying us had to work like a 20 hour shift that day (some kind of major network upgrade) and it was the only time we could do it.
It was a tree in the front yard of on of our friend's. It was all gnarly and the branches formed a canopy that drooped to about 5 ft. from the ground about 15 ft. away from the trunk. My wife on seeing it for the first time proclaimed it a "fairy tree" insisting it was inhabited by the fair folk.
It sounds just gorgeous. And way to go, having it at midnight! That is supercool. I like that your friend did the ceremony; I think that is the ideal way.
I have another picture of the tree, from the other side. It's a strangler fig devouring a date palm, but date palms are survivors, too. It's sprouted more fronds and reached way higher than the ficus has, allowing it to still get light. Very cool.
Some of our friends in Japan got married at midnight on January 1st - the were actually the first marriage of the year in the whole prefecture. We had other friends get married on 2/14... not that it's exactly an original idea. ;-)
