OCD and SF

Ah, the joys of obsessive-compulsive disorder: I have a toothache. I'm going to the periodontist on the 27th, and quite frankly, I think I'm going to lose the tooth. So anyway I have this ache off and on.

Card, for me, is the living embodiment of "Love the Art, Hate the Artist." His essay at the beginning of "Future on Ice" had me spitting swears and wanting to hurl the thing across the room as he whined about "Anti-abortion speech being the most restricted speech in the country," and how SF is so secular, and why that's a horrible thing.

Thank G-d it's not just me. I love Card's work (except for Hart's Hope...what the HELL was that?), and I love that in Enchanted he tried to use Jewish protagonists (and did a pretty credible job for a Mormon), but his essays make me want to just HIT HIM.

Apparently though he's a very charismatic speaker...he taught at the Antioch Writers' Conference a couple of years in a row. And while I would never engage him in a political discussion, I would kill to have him as a writing teacher. If you read the forewards in Maps in a Mirror, you will learn all you need to know about crafting a really good short story.

However, the writer I have to say I've modeled my life on (not my writing...but the way I talk, the way I view the world, and the way I react to others) would have to be Harlan Ellison.

Minus the multiple marriages, though.
