My thoughts upon beginning The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation - Vol. I: The Pox Party by M. T. Anderson (of Boston) were that it was similar in tone to Johnathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, albeit with more engaging writing, fewer footnotes, added racial commentary, and with absolutely no magic in it at all ( Read more... )

I'm afraid that we appear to be adding insult to injury by sending you our Queen to celebrate the founding of Jamestown. Oops! Sorry about that.

My family are, as you've probably gathered, the proverbial rainbow tribe. We can, however, trace the English part of our ancestry back to the 12th century... when our ancestors were... crusaders... ::facepalm::

Whenever we visit their gravesites we listen attentively for the sound of corpses spinning at supernatural velocities. Heh.

Yes, the significance of that was not lost on me. I heard Liz (Mk II) addressing the now glossy, tidy & touristy remains of the Jamestown fort on the radio the other day. Four hundred years and the proverbial can of worms. Sigh.

Mind you, one of my great-uncles fought in the second world war . . . against the Russians. We are thus tactfully quiet on Veterans Day and the like. ::facepalm::
