yay! a personalit test! :)kolyavolkovJuly 16 2008, 02:55:18 UTC
as near as I can tell my tendencies are railroad, fluff, narrative(with occasional achievment yearnings), and a midpoint somewhere closer to Ronin than Horde.
man, I wish I had time for gaming. someday we'll have to get a good Over the Edge game going.

I recently had some discussions with a gamer here at work, and although he was pretty critical of the entire idea at first, after reading this stuff he kind of came around. He had some pretty good comments, specifically about feeling that some of the questions we have not being very neutral, and also that some of the terms we used being not very neutral. Railroad and Horde were the two he objected to, feeling the negative connotations of both would make people unhappy. I am still not sure. Did you get the tendencies you listed above from answering the questions or from looking at the trait descriptions. If it is from the questions how close do you think it matches reality? Just kinda curious.

A little bit of both the descriptions and the questions. I agree that they were a bit weighted, but only in that you can tell which types the GMs prefer. :-P
and it's fairly obvious(but doesn't hurt to point out) that most people are going to be somewhere on the scale...not one extreme nor the other.
for instance, I say that I tend toward Ronin rather than Horde because I like smaller groups where each character can get a bit of exploration, but the story moves along with the group as a whole. besides...focusing on another character for a little while allows one to more leisurely take care of other gaming needs...like pizza and josta consumption and looking up skills and weapons' tables. ;)
I don't think railroad is necesserily negative, but then I like traveling by rail and don't think of BEING railroaded. I also prefer stories that have a progression to them. aimless wandering, especially with large groups can be trying for gamers and GMs.

It is good to hear your opinion about the Railroad term. Being railroaded is the specific concept about which my friend made his criticism. Did you have any specific ones that our personal biases were showing through? I think it would be good to eliminate as much of that as possible. Barring that it might be ok to include questions biased in the other direction to help balance things out. We definitely feel that these traits are very much spectra, and people can find themselves relatively close to the middle on a number of them.
Thinking back on some of the problems I have witnessed in games past, some of the most troublesome players were ones that were extreme in their play style. It is tough to find an entire group that would be extreme in the same manner as everyone else meaning balance across the board would be the best way to have a satisfying group.
