Hmm, never read anything by Somerset Maugham but this sounds like it might be rather interesting. Have added it to my 'find at the library' list.

I've now read two of his books that I've really liked, and I would definitely recommend them both (this one and The Painted Veil). Enjoy, if you decide to go for it!
