I've seen a Ukrainian cartoon with Silver shown as almost a positive character. As for Hawkins, changing uneventful life for the adventures is the dream of many a boy, that's why the book is so popular.

I think Silver is really the hero of the book, in a way; at least he's the character that the author cares most about. Jim doesn't have that much personality considering he's the narrator.
