Writer's Block: LiveJournal Book Club

Is anyone really surprised that I'm saying Pride and Prejudice? At first I actually wasn't  going to pick this, because I know Austen isn't everyone's cup of tea. But then I thought, it doesn't matter whether you love it; it's just one of those books that are essential to being an educated adult (if English is your native language, at least). Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book. It's just great writing.

You definitely should! It's a good intro to Austen too, if you've never read her before - probably her most widely appealing work.

If I could make people read one novel, it would have been The Sun Also Rises for a very long time, but for the last several years it's been Mariette in Ecstasy. I can't say the author's other work has grabbed me at all, really, but that one book is too beautiful not to read. The prose is sometimes like poetry, and there is a connection between the physical world of the novel, the writing, and the plot. At least I think there is. Lovely book. Absolutely lovely. Some people shy away from it because of the subject matter, I think, but that's silly, like thinking Austen is only for girls.

Never heard of Mariette in Ecstasy...I'll have to check it out. The Sun Also Rises is definitely on my list!
