Is anyone really surprised that I'm saying Pride and Prejudice? At first I actually wasn't  going to pick this, because I know Austen isn't everyone's cup of tea. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book. It's just great writing.

You definitely should! It's a good intro to Austen too, if you've never read her before - probably her most widely appealing work.

If I could make people read one novel, it would have been The Sun Also Rises for a very long time, but for the last several years it's been Mariette in Ecstasy. I can't say the author's other work has grabbed me at all, really, but that one book is too beautiful not to read. The prose is sometimes like poetry, and there is a connection between the physical world of the novel, the writing, and the plot. At least I think there is. Lovely book. Absolutely lovely. Some people shy away from it because of the subject matter, I think, but that's silly, like thinking Austen is only for girls.

Never heard of Mariette in Ecstasy...I'll have to check it out. The Sun Also Rises is definitely on my list!
