It's been years since I read this book but reading the Pevear and Volokhonsky version must've been great! (I love their translated version) I agree that it is a tricky book to assess because unlike other Russian classics that are famous from that time period, this one's more straight out philosophical/critical/psychological/whathaveyou.

I did like the translation. I don't know Russian, so I can't speak to accuracy, but it was definitely very readable. I also liked Pevear's forward with his explanations of why he and Volokhonsky translated certain words in certain ways. I look forward to reading more of this team's translations! Perhaps when I finally get around to War and Peace...

Cultural insiders sometimes struggle to understand Dostoevsky's points too.
