I'm currently reading this on my Nook. (Downloaded for free!) I'm looking forward to finishing it up...you're right, though...it's not anywhere near as racy as my romance novels!

Also, the sex scenes really are not described in a sexy way...after most of them, I was left thinking "Eww."

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that this isn't a story but a social polemic. I remember reading it with such anticipation - I was expecting some pulse-quickening, heart-stopping romance. It is definitely not romantic in any sense of the word - the very opposite if you ask me - and no matter how racy it was considered at the time, it is, as you say, decidedly not sexy. I remember wondering what the fuss was all about.

You're right, this book is pretty much the opposite of romantic! Definitely a 'classic' that fell flat for me.
