I read the first one, but it didn't hook me. I kind of wish it had, because I love the idea, but it was all too elastic, and I guess I'm a pedestrian kind of guy.
Too bad The Eyre Affair didn't work for you, but I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea. I don't think world-building as such is Fforde's strength; he just tosses in whatever he likes to make it funny or entertaining. It's great -- if you don't think about it too much!
