I'm always trying to read Neil Gaiman's stuff because I keep hearing about how great he is, but I have not managed to make it through one of his books :( I even tried to read The Sandman but I can't get used to the American comic book style lol.
Although I can deal with sad and ambiguous endings, reading more than 30 of them in a row gets a bit draining!
I feel like that defeats the point of having ambiguous endings if it's ALL THE TIME.
Have you tried Neverwhere? It's definitely my favorite Gaiman read so far, and I really liked it. I've also heard good things about American Gods and Good Omens (co-written with Terry Pratchett).
I haven't read everything by Gaiman, but I thought American Gods was his best work, and I liked Neverwhere.
If you're interested in these kinds of stories, though I know it's not your usual fare, you might want to try Kelly Link's Pretty Monsters, which is currently delighting the heck out of me.
Pretty Monsters does look somewhat interesting -- and the Amazon blurb even compares her writing to Neil Gaiman's! Maybe I'll check it out closer to Halloween. American Gods is also on my "I'll get to it someday" list.
