Some LibraryThing goodness

Sep 19, 2010 18:51

I have somehow gotten myself involved in another challenge on LibraryThing. It is creatively called the "Five and Dime" challenge, and the rules are: (1) pick 5 or 10 categories, and (2) read 5 or 10 books in each category. Since I'm already involved in about a gazillion other challenges, I'm just going to aim for 5 books in 5 different categories ( Read more... )

Urban fantasy! Check out Patricia Briggs' Mercedes Thompson series :) It starts with Moon Called. They're all pretty much stand-alone with no cliffhangers, which is good.

Haha, thanks for the rec! :) I actually read Moon Called a couple of years ago, but what with one thing and another, I never got around to the rest of the series. I really liked it, though! I am definitely planning to continue with the series one of these days (though I'll probably need to re-read Moon Called first!).

Yay! I'm glad you liked it :) There are five books in the series now, and a spin-off Alpha and Omega series about Samuel's brother Charles, if you want to check that one out.

That's the thing about series. So many of them are excellent, and I want to read them...but when they go past 3 books or so, it's really hard for me to keep up with them!

For urban fantasy, may I recommend:

The Tooth Fairy by Graham Joyce Really, just a wonderful book regardless of genre.

Memory and Dream by Charles de Lint Sometimes I think de Lint gets a little lazy with his writing, but of all I've read by him, this one is still my favorite.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman It's possible that Gaimen is over-praised, but this is a fine book regardless, and one with a rather sly sense of humor, I thought.

Any one of those would be good, I think, but if choosing just one, I'd have to go with The Tooth Fairy. None of these are the Vampire Hunter/Wereolf Hunter type, and they aren't paranormal romance. Just plain old Urban Fantasy done well.

Thanks for the recommendations! It would be nice to read an urban fantasy novel that isn't all about a badass chick who's also a witch/demon hunter/shapeshifter/what-have-you. That's fun to read sometimes, but it does get old!

Well, I ended up updating my profile, but trying to sit down and catalog as many books as I own (I keep saying I should scrape up the $25 fee for a permanent account)...that's a daunting task! At least it's less if a Herculean effort than a friend of mine: between her and her husband, I believe they own something like 10 or 11 thousand books. They've never found the courage to try and get a true count!

Yes, the cataloging can be a pain! Your friend's library is astounding to me -- ten thousand books? It's madness, I tell you!
