Unity in Christ

I wish all the Christians of the world could grow to live together in a 'unity in diversity'. The history of Christianity is full of schism and sectarianism, with different groups insisting on their own version of doctrinal uniformity, and declaring themselves 'out of communion' with anyone who does not accept their particular interpretation of ' ( Read more... )

You can't have it both ways. If God is truth, then error is not acceptable. So, no... whatever you might think about the matter, you are not in communion with all Christians, because truth and error cannot tolerate one another.

Why should it be so wrong to be in error about something? What would be so spectacular about it? Isn't it more that we should try to be humble and such? Bearing our own errors that we have had in dignity? I don't see God or his son Jesus as the great argumenters. This is not greece where arguing counted for everything. Instead I see in Christ an admonition to love God, life and men. Susannah has it all right here. Not even the bible spells your position out like that. "God is truth and error is not acceptable". But it says, "The letter kills but the spirit gives life." It should be more about life and love then!

And that, neighbours *points to comment above* is why I finally left all this stuff behind. I'm done with being part of something that's so toxic with in-fighting that there is just no way any kind of god who has any business being worthy of any worship would tolerate this in his name.

I find good encouragement to stick with christian things in the "cross of the south" idea and thought complex. Think of ships who discover the south sea. Southern life and such, as in old africa, a bit italy and spain, and La Isla Bonita. In such things there is much Christ spirit.

It's a beautiful idea, but the first great schism concerning the 'filioque' clause is going to be difficult to resolve.

Don't listen to anyone trying to dissuade you; this mentality you shared is EXACTLY what will change the world for Him! The word says that they will know us by our love for one another. In perfect love, there is no fear of differences between believers. If we cannot commune with one another, the world will never understand God's passionate desire to commune with THEM, just as they are.

You're onto something, friend. This is the essence of the Gospel. Don't stop!

Would that all of God's people could unite as we should - Christians, Catholics, Jews... everyone who looks to the one true Creator. Our similarities far outweigh our differences. I realize most people would still worship in the manner they are accustomed to but it would be nice if we could stop wasting resources attacking one another or trying to reinvent the wheel when the believers down the street already have a ministry just like it that we could share in. The Enemy loves it when he can get us out of fellowship with one another over music styles, membership disputes and orders of liturgy.
