A true blessing is most valuable. By definition we are talking about something holy. Something divine. Not a, "have a nice day" sort of thing. So what is so special about a blessing? We have all heard the saying, "you can't take it with you." But a true blessing, that is an eternal. This IS something you can take with you.
I think a blessing is not to do with any potency of the priest who may say it, but an acknowledgment of deeper reality and the spiritual benevolence of the divine, and the power of the Holy to break through to our lives.
It's an acknowledgment and assertion of this benevolence and the agency of love and grace, and a kind of laying claim to it, and saying, yes we believe, and an invitation to the hearer to lay claim too (in their own lives) and receive.

I half agree with you here. It's not the potency of the priest, but it is the potency of Christ who works in a unique way through those ordained to His priestly ministry.
