Fasting

So, this may be a kind of stupid question, but just exactly how does the Christian fast? I have heard water only, bread and water only, reducing meals, and so on. Thanks.

There are no rules as to what foods, some go on juice only fasts, some people will give up both food & water, others will give up one particular vice.

The bible is more direct on our 'heart' when we fast;

1. Don't make a show of it
2. Make sure we are praying according to God's will.

culturemonk is completely right. I for one do partial fasts. Sometimes only on liquids, or sometimes I only eat one meal a day. It's really about the sacrifice and obedience I think that is the bigger picture.

Yes, the key is to devote the actual fasting time to God. It doesn't do any good to simply not eat...because one way or another, something else will just fill the place of the meal.

I believe it's up to you- some follow the fasting regulations set out by the Catholic church- I don't know enough about those to know for sure what they entail, but I imagine that someone else on here can fill you in. But I've heard of the same things as you have, and even fasting specifically from items- TV, Internet; anything that takes your focus off of God...

If you have a look in the Bible, you will see that there are a few different models - you are going to have to choose one that works for you. The main types are "Daniel" fasts (partial fasts where you give up meat or something specific) or "complete" fasts where people typically give up all solid food. Some people drink juices, others just water. For the purposes of fasting, milk is usually regarded as a food (I don't know why ( ... )
