St. Hippolytus on the Logos and Creation

There is only one God, brethren, and we learn about him only from sacred Scripture. It is therefore our duty to become acquainted with what Scripture proclaims and to investigate its teachings thoroughly. We should believe them in the sense that the Father wills, thinking of the Son in the way the Father wills, and accepting the teaching he wills ( Read more... )

A little question on something I struggle with susannah December 25 2008, 10:56:56 UTC
Peace and strong love to you, this Christmas Day.

As you know, I was very touched and impressed by your earlier post, on Benedict's commentary about the Word become flesh, as explored in John 1. It is still very much on my mind as I celebrate the nativity today.

I have one serious, and respectful, question to ask on these remarks of yours:

"All of the suffering in our world... is the result of creation's revolt against this order... Whenever we revolt against this design, God's design, we create unnecessary suffering, in ourselves and in the universe."My question is: when a baby is born with cancer or some terrible illness, is the baby itself responsible for its affliction ( ... )

Under the laws of science, the child would be suffering from cancer due to a genetic abnormality that made it vulnerable to a mutation that created an oncogene.

Under theology, the death of a child from cancer can be attributed to Creation itself decaying under the weight of sin.

Under human thinking, either way you cut it, it still seems a pointless tragedy to snuff out a life before it has barely begun.

Under God's thinking...were I God, this universe would be a very different place indeed, but were I God, people would still be whining about the way I do things.

Hi Susannah! Sorry I'm just getting back, and this question/comment deserves a much lengthier and more comprehensive response than I can give at the moment, but I did just want to mention a few things, and then, if you don't mind, give a reading recommendation. Also, on New Year's Day I will be posting another message from Pope Benedict that involves some more discussion on original sin, and perhaps they too will be illuminating ( ... )

Read what St. Paul says of the resurrection in, and how this corruptibility, this suffering, even of the little infant child, will ultimately be overcome ( ... )
