This was wonderful!
I loved this simile: "They fluttered away like angry crows, cawing their harsh words one last time as the old physician entered the room." Such a great description, and it feels so fitting for Merlin. :)
You also do such a wonderful job showing Merlin's self-doubt, and it's heartbreaking: "The old physician's voice was quiet but there as a strength of steel in his eyes that Merlin had only ever saw in his mother. It must be something that ran in the family, although Merlin despaired for a moment that it had skipped him."
This line made me laugh: "Only ones actions make us monsters. And your recent actions so far have shown you to be an idiot. Picking a fight with the Prince." :D
I also like the twist of Merlin having connections to the Dragon Lords on both sides of his family. Fantastic work!
