Search Engines...

I have a vague recollection that someone on my flist needed to get a website to answer to a particular search engine search. I have NO idea how to make this happen, but have been asked by the Newcomb legal team to try to get the site so that google finds it first when a user types in "Newcomb College". Help the clueless? The way you get it to happen is you get everyone you know to link to the site from anywhere they can. Have them link from LJ posts, from their own pages, from comments on your LJ.

Google's ranking works by counting the number of people linking TO a site. The more, the higher the ranking. Now, you can make a particular search term return your site first by having people put the term you want to use in the link.

For example ~a href="http://www.newcomblives.com"~Newcomb College~/a~ (Replace the ~ with "<" and ">")

If you can get hundreds of people to do it, you'll be the top unsponsored link on Google. That's how people have managed to fix it so the top result on Google for "Miserable failure" is the George W. Bush campaign website. (The technique is called "Google boming")

So, we should actually type in the Newcomb College and then click on it?

The main thing is to get as many people as possible to post the link. It's not so much how many people click it, but how many links there are. Google's web spiders count links.

The more ethically challenged out there actually have programs that will generate thousands of bogus webpages that contain nothing but the link. For example, I have 5 gigs at Ace-host.net. I would fill it up with pages that have nothing on them but the link. (Porn sites use this technique to raise engine ranking.)

The more ethical way to go about it is to spread the link as a meme, so that each link is on a real, publicly viewable page or blog.

It's called googlebombing, and it was done to the terms "Jew" and "Santorum." I was posting links a while back so that the first entry for "Jew" would not be an anti-Semetic site. I'll be glad to link to this in a couple of places, starting with my LJ.

Here's a history of Googlebombing. If campaigns like this could get users looking for "hell" to the Microsoft web page and "liar" to Tony Blair's, we can get your site to the top for your college. (There's a war to see who "Miserable Failure" gets you, and Dubya's winning.)

And it's "Semitic," of course. I am having a bad spelling decade.

I remember that! I did a lot of stuff at that point although it's so vague as to be as if I never knew... I put it in the Sandlot header, and there's an RSS feed on the womenscollege community. I can think of lots of places to put it, actually... Nods.

I posted an entry in my writing blog, Chris -- my lj blocks the Google spiders.

I managed four links in three sentences. :)

Thank you, thank you! I have, for the first time ever, taken the google spider block thing off my LJ. It's worth the risk right now. Much appreciation, m'dear.

We've not met, Chris, but I've come across several of my flist referring to your post, so I've put up a post and a link from mine too. I went to an all-women college myself, and I am disgusted at the way so many of them have been closed or "merged", and their identities and the aspirations of their founders just thrown to the winds.

Oh *thank you* Gillo! It's making me insane -- and in our case, they can't even point to flagging enrollments or poor financial performance as an excuse to eliminate. They are spending far more in converting us to a mere program than they have saved by forcing our dean out of the university and its power structure!

I've done some reading about this, and it disgusts me. I do hope the legal action succeeds.
