In the Maratimes, mainly Newfoundland, there's actaully a few viking settlements that have been found. Ranging for a few small buildings to mini vilages. But nothing highly developed. In the 980's, viking were plodding around in Iceland and Greenland. In 986 one fellow with a strange name traveled south west [towards north america] but got a little scared and went back home. The someone else followed after him, named Lief, I think, he found what was probably Baffin Island, went a little south, found Labrador - a little more southward and they found somewhere with flat pastures and good ground. Leif thought this was smashing and built a big house. Then he got a little homesick and went back to Greenland.
