John Oliver had at least known of Stephen Colbert for quite some time. Really, how could he not, when he was jokingly being compared to him more often than one would think, after coming to The Daily Show? The general list of criteria was: being brunette, wearing glasses; being charming (because being British automatically counted in his favor, according to Jason Jones,) and being able make Jon Stewart laugh (but it wasn’t like he was the only one in the studio to ever strive for that
