WTF, America?

Oct 01, 2008 23:21

I've been sort of lurking around the internet, not posting much, though I do try to check in when I can. Applying to law school is kicking my ass, and when I do have a minute to sit down at the computer, I find I would rather veg out on YouTube than do anything that requires thought. I've also been awfully bitter and cynical lately, especially ( Read more... )

politics, you have made me angry. stop it., wtf?

On the news a few days ago, they showed some small interviews with a few people from a small town in PA. One of them said the same, that she supported Hillary, but couldn't support Obama and then she kind of skated around the reason why, while another woman straight out said, 'because I don't want a black president.'

The mind, it boggles.

The ones who come out and say it? Yeah, they're horrible, but at least they're oblivious about it. Maybe if they knew it was wrong, they would think twice. But I will never understand the people who believe that crap, but who know it's wrong, which is why they won't come out and say it (or, if they do, like this lady, they're all "No offense!").

I really don't know which is worse.

You're absolutely right. Yeah, the first woman obviously just didn't want to have a black president/support a black man, but she couldn't think of something to say, and it was *so* obvious.
*sigh*

My neighbor, who is a very nice man in his 70s, told my husband that he "just can't bring himself to vote for a black man." I really think race will play a big part in this election, whether people will admit it or not. It upsets and angers me and it's so, so discouraging.

Also, I adore your icon beyond words.

Thanks! Its my first time using this icon. While the article itself was all kinds of wacky, part of me would like to thank Crazy Andy (no last name, dear) from Reno for giving me cause to bust out mortified!Uhura.

It is discouraging. I do feel bad for the people who are so afraid of what minorities will do when they have any power. They're so frightened that it's crazy. I can't imagine living with that much fear every day of my life. If Obama wins, the next four years will be horrible for them.

Even though my parents have seen their retirement account decimated, part of me is glad that the economy took the downturn. If there's one thing that would force Americans to look beyond their misconceptions about race, I think that's it.
