Ad.ly eh? A friend of mine recently went to Bit Torrent and he's having all sorts of fun there. It's kind of surprising to hear you say your potential is untapped at a place like Google but you know yourself quite well.
Just out of curiosity, had you been in the MTV office would you still feel the same way?
As for the referrals, yeah, that's life... maybe you can re-recruit the 2 friends in the same company (after a year that is) :)
You can look at Google as one fine company, and an amazing one to have on your resume. Now, you'll have so much more control of your destiny in Ad.ly, and that is something money can't buy. Whether you stay or go somewhere else, it's great that you're doing what you think makes life more fulfilling. Not everything is about money and options and status and such. When you do what is meaningful for you, the choices you'll make and the experiences you'll gain will make you much wealthier than people who amass material goods and empty status. Peace.
Mountain View would have offered other projects that I could have moved to and potentially exercised myself. I'd have been stoked to join the Unladen Swallow team, even though the project is winding down and I have little experience with those kinds of things. Ditto with a half dozen other projects. On the other side of things, I've also been contacted by a half-dozen startups in the MTV area, so the pressure to leave would have been higher as well.
Google was a great experience. After having worked there, I now know a lot of the requirements for building a company that can change the world (at least in the engineering level). They offered me a great opportunity, I am very happy to have worked there, and will be thankful for having been able to meet some of the most amazing people.
What happened to Google? They came, recruited, had 200 people including Graduates for the meeting in the ICS building, announced a few things, then what?

Good on the resume, etc., that doesn't hurt.
