Good news...

I am finally able to tell people about what I have been working on in the last 5+ months.

I built the back end of Affini, A Network Of TrustAside from incoming and outgoing SMTP, and a small Perl daemon, I built everything that handles email at Affini. The "Inbox" and "Queue" on the site both query my backend. The Butlers that hit your mailboxes ( Read more... )

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure that it'll be actually useful. For now, the web interface is far too complicated/confusing. It doesn't seem to clearly explain what it does, either. I'll take another look later when the site isn't undergoing nightly maintenance.

Okay, the points thing is probably the most confusing thing. The other parts make more sense now. Seems like a lot of trouble though. At least with a server running TMDA, addresses on outgoing mail are added to a whitelist so you don't have to do it yourself.

Hmm, and:

Ahh, so you are user number 4 in the production database. *laugh* I just got an email asking about how people found Affini so quick.

Note that it is currently beta. We started integrating on Monday, and I only started working on the Butler (after leaving it alone for nearly a month) on Monday as well. We have turned the firewall back on because apparently it is not quite ready for use yet.

We have various auto-whitelisting methods up our sleeves that are implemented, but don't yet have interfaces.

Re: points
Yeah, a point is a penny. I told them from the start that they shouldn't fuck around with points, they should just stick with money, as there is a 1-to-1 correspondance anyways. There was a good argument against only having money three months ago, but I can't for the life of me remember.

If maintenance were to happen on a regular basis, when would be a better time than nightly?

It's too bad the webserver can't handle the readers of your livejournal ;)

No, we turned on the firewall because we're going to be killing and restarting services over the next few days.

bah, there should at least be a page or two that has the usual marketspeak about what you guys are up to that doesn't need to be blackholed when you're fiddling with the service

Yeah, well this was a "silent release". No press or anything, just people spreading the word while we get the kinks worked out.

The real release is, I believe, Sunday, but we only put the software on the machines this afternoon (I've been testing it on other machines all week).

It's cool. I didn't want you to be my friend because you can understand this facet of what I do; I want you to be my friend because, quite simply, I like who you are and what you do. I like how you treat people, express your perspective on the world, and handle yourself in situations that aren't going your way.

Even more simply; you fucking rock.

Nah, sometimes I shit all over people; but those are people I don't like.

And as for rocking your face off, I'll stop rocking so hard; I like your face and want you to keep it! Keep the face...
