Sam rolled over in his bed, expecting to see Finn sleeping beside him but instead he found a cold spot where the boy once led. At first the blonde assumed Finn had just woken up before him and gone to the bathroom or something, but then he realized no one gets completely dressed - shoes and all - to go to the bathroom. Quickly pulling the duvet from his still naked body, he slipped on some shorts and a shirt before leaving his room to find the bathroom door wide open and completely empty. Returning to his now messy room, somewhat matching Finn’s thanks to the clothes thrown everywhere and the sheets disrupted on his bed, he grabbed his phone to call the wandering boy but before he could even find Finn’s number a couple of loud laughs sounded from downstairs. Oh, crap. Sam practically ran to the staircase to find Finn sitting with his parents and siblings at the table. Steadily walking down the wooden stairs, fingers shaking a little against the banister, Sam smiled as his little sister waved.
“Oh here he is! How are you feeling, honey? Finn told us you practically fainted mid-conversation.” Sam’s equally blonde mother greeted him with a smile, pulling out a chair for him before forcing a bowl of soup in his face. “You need to eat.” Giving Finn a confused glance, Sam obeyed his mother and took a spoonful of the tomato soup into his mouth.
“Yeah, it must be all the dance rehearsals we’ve had lately. It takes a little while to get used to it.” Finn explained for Sam’s confused benefit. “…Not to mention the football practise right after all that dancing, coach had us doing suicide runs for a straight hour!”
“I thought you didn’t have football practice today?” Sam’s father jumped into the conversation, and catching Finn’s ‘oh god what do I say now’ face Sam had no choice but to join in with the lies.
“Coach added an extra day because of the game coming up; she wants us all in top shape before we go against the Bulls next week.” Speaking around a mouth full of hot soup and watching Finn nod along with a dopey smile, it was all Sam could come up with that his father would buy.
Sam’s little sister, Stacie, wandered up to him and sat on his lap. “Are you going to be okay, Sammy?” She asked, sounding like she was just about to cry.
Pushing her bright blonde hair from her face, Sam smiled at her - he didn’t want to lie to her but he would have to now. “I’m going to be fine, I’m just a little tired is all.” He reassured her. “Don’t cry, Stacie. If I wasn’t fine, I couldn’t take you shopping tomorrow for your Birthday remember?” As soon as he mentioned it, her face lit up and she mimicked the wide smile on Sam’s face.
Continuing to eat his soup, Sam watched Finn talk football with his father. Finn seemed so calm considering he usually sucked at lying but it was sweet that he got up and greeted his family. They weren’t even dating properly yet and Finn was so comfortable with it all, whereas Sam was mentally freaking out that his family might suspect they’d been doing stuff together.
“Mom, is it okay if Finn stays the night? It’s already pretty late, and I still need to drive him to school.” It was a reasonable excuse for Finn to stay over, and it was rare Sam ever had friends over. There was no way she could say no.
“Yes. Sure, if it’s okay with your mother Finn? I don’t see why not.” She agreed after thinking about it for a second. “I’m sure Sam will find you something to wear for school, he has so many clothes. And you don’t mind sleeping on the sofa?” She asked, directing everything she said toward the deer in headlights by the name of Finn Hudson.
“He can sleep in my room.” Sam interjected. “There’s more than enough room, and besides that couch is so uncomfortable and after the day we’ve had he’s going to need a real bed. I don’t mind sharing.” Finn nodded along to everything, Sam wasn’t even sure he was listening but alas they got what they wanted.
“That’s fine. Are you done with the soup, Sam? I need to do the dishes before we start Stacie and Stevie’s homework.” His mother rose, about take the almost empty bowl from the table until Sam stood, bowl in hand.
“Me and Finn will do them, it’s my turn anyway.” Leaving for the kitchen, pulling Finn from the table as he did so, Sam looked at the massive pile of dishes left in the sink. Giving a laugh, Sam tossed a couple of gloves at Finn before beginning to run the tap. “That was a close one,” he whispered. “Thanks dude, you saved our asses out there.”
Sam can only imagine the look on his parents faces if they had walked into his room before Finn had woken up and seeing their son and a random boy naked against one another. It would destroy them, and they would no doubt disown Sam. His parents were great parents, not spiteful in anyway, but Sam could only ever imagine the worst from them if they found out. They could never find out, ever.
Once the sink had filled with steaming, soap water Finn began to wash the plates and Sam stood silently next to him waiting to dry them. Neither of them spoke, Sam was freaking out too much and Finn kept giving him concerned glances - at least understanding Sam didn’t want to talk. It was a very silent 20 minutes of incessant washing and drying, until the kitchen was almost spotless.
“Hey boys, we’re going to go to bed so when you go upstairs remember to be quiet.” Sam’s mom poked her head through the kitchen door with a smile.
“No problem, Mom. Good night.” He smiled, waiting for her to leave before finally turning to Finn. “This can never happen again okay?” He whispered with a slight anger to his breathy voice. Its not that he didn’t appreciate Finn covering his ass, but it shouldn’t have happened in the first place - he should never have to.
Finn looked a little shocked at Sam’s tone, but he didn’t return it. “Okay, dude. I panicked, and I couldn’t exactly jump out of your window.”
Sam backed off a little not meaning for it to sound so mean. “Sorry, I just. If they found out…” He raised a hand to his face, sighing a little - some out of relief but mostly just fear.
“Sam, I get it and its fine. I would’ve freaked out when my mom almost caught us, but my mind was elsewhere.” Sam was now leaning on the kitchen worktop, both hands cradling his head. He felt Finn’s hand graze his back for a second before it quickly retreated, he must’ve realized they couldn’t risk it tonight. “Sam please, just say something.”
Hearing the pleas, Sam rose from the hard surface and looked at Finn. “I’m just so tired, and freaked out,” He explained. “I didn’t mean to take it out on you. You did what you could.” His large lips curled in a faint smile for Finn, hiding the fact that inside Sam was almost breaking down. If this is how he reacts when his parents aren’t even suspecting him, he couldn’t even imagine how he would feel if they ever found out and he didn’t want to, because it was never going to happen.
“Forget it, okay? Let’s just go to bed, because you need all the rest you can get fainting boy.” Finn laughed at the now widening smile on Sam’s face.
“Fine, but next time you’re the sick one okay?” It was so weird to joke about it, but it made him feel less crappy so he just went with, pushing Finn out of the kitchen. The taller boy seemed to know his way, heading straight for the stairs and into Sam’s bedroom.
Sam went through his drawers, pulling out a pair of pyjama pants he’s probably never worn and a black t-shirt and throwing them at Finn who began to change instantly. Sam watched slightly in between going through his toiletries and pulling out an unopened toothbrush, his mom buys new ones almost every month. “Here, bathrooms just across from my room. I’ll be there in a second I just need to find you something to sleep in.” Sam knew that if they shared the duvet one of them wouldn’t be able to control themselves and he could not have his parents - who were in the room next to Sam’s - hearing them do anything.
After finding a thick blanket, he walked to the bathroom were Finn was leaning over the sink. Grabbing his own toothbrush, Sam placed a small amount of paste and began to brush next to Finn. Less than a week and they were already as domestic as a married couple, it was freaky. Sam continued to brush, spitting out the soap when needed, when Finn brushed past him and waited at the door. Once Sam had finished, they returned to his room and locked the door behind them because even Sam couldn’t promise he wouldn’t end up cuddling up to Finn. He handed the taller boy the large, thick blanket before sinking into the warm duvet and watched Finn lay down next to him with a smile.
Sam watched Finn slide a hand towards the duvet, clearly trying to get his hand underneath it. “Dude, stop, you know we can’t.” He said with a frown.
“I just wanted to hold you hand.” And then Sam just melted at the cuteness Finn was displaying, pulling the outstretched hand under the duvet and enclosing it in his own large hand, running over Finn’s fingers with his thumb. He then turned around, his back to Finn but their hands still connected at his chest. Finn scooted closer and proceeded to snuggle with Sam.
“Fine, but that’s all for tonight.” Sam smiled, feeling Finn’s slow breathing against his neck. They stayed like that, Sam wide awake as Finn’s sleeping body pressed against him. It took him a while to actually calm his brain down and close his eyes to sleep. So much had happened in such a short time, and it wasn’t that he wasn’t happy - Sam just couldn’t believe that it could ever be as easy as it seemed but instead of worrying more he merely held Finn’s hand tightly in his own - finding comfort in the simplicity of it all.
