Chapter 4
Standing in front of the door marked 44 had never been more awkward for Olive. Not even awkwardness the morning she had first met Chuck had came close to the way she felt that night. She was flanked by Ned on the left and Chuck on the right. Chuck was grinning from ear holding Olive’s hand. Ned’s hands for once were not in his pockets, but resting comfortably at his sides. Now and again as they had walked to door 44 his hand had brushed against Olive’s and for once the Pie Maker didn’t cringe at the touch.
“I hope you don’t mind.” Chuck began nervously as she opened the door. “I, uh, I moved in while you were gone?”
“The poor have all my earthly possessions anyway.” Olive trilled as she entered the apartment which was hers and not hers at the same time.
Chuck removed her starchy collar and veil as she watched Olive take in her new surroundings.
“Olive can you take Digby for a walk? Chuck and I need to talk.”
“Yeah okay.” Olive leaned in close to Ned. “You sure?”
“Trust me.” He whispered back.
Olive knew she had no choice. She accepted from Chuck the spare key to her apartment. She followed Ned to his apartment to fetch Digby and a second leash for Pigby. When she returned the apartment was empty. She found the towels where she expected them to be. Olive spent more time in the shower than she intended. She heard the door open. Quickly she wrapped the towel around herself and slipped nearly unseen into the bedroom.
Chuck leaned against the door until she heard Ned’s door close. She too had seen Olive enter the bedroom. “I can stay with Ned if you want.”
“No.” Was the only response Olive could trust herself to make. All the way home Olive had tried to convince herself that the sensations she was feeling as Chuck snuggled against her were sisterly affection. Neither heart nor mind were fooled.
“I keep my pajamas in the second drawer on the left.” Chuck picked up the habit she had hastily changed out of before going to the roof to talk with Ned.
The drawer, newly polished, slid easily.
Chuck noticed a smudge on the bright white collar. When she looked closer she realized it a very pale lipstick mark. Confused she held it up to her neck. The smudge lined up on the right side of Chuck’s neck just below her ear. The warmth that had filled the secret hole in her heart exploded outward filling her whole being. Olive had kissed her. A kiss unfelt through the stiff fabric.
“Olive?” Chuck opened the door to the bedroom. She was stopped dead by what she saw.
Before her was Olive dressed in a pair of her pajamas. The bottoms were ridiculously long. Olive had rolled them up but they still puddled around her feet. Not that Olive needed them. Chuck’s pajama top hung loosely on the petit woman. The hem of the shirt fell nearly to her knees. The sleeves covered all but Olive’s finger tips. There was only one word that could describe Olive.
“Adorable.” Chuck whispered breathlessly.
Olive hovered, unable to decide what she should do next. Did she dare tell Chuck the new secret that had formed in her heart?
Little did Olive realize that her “secret” had been displayed on her face from the moment Chuck had entered the bedroom. Chuck brushed back the hair surrounding Olive’s face. She gently turned Olive’s face upward. Chuck felt Olive’s hands settle softly on her hips. The distance between them vanished.
When Olive’s breath returned, her lips were tingling and there was the faint taste of honey on her tongue.
“Welcome home.” Chuck whispered into Olive’s ear just before she dropped her lips to Olive’s adorable neck.
