does anyone know the technical name for the hammer/mallet thing that doctors use to test your reflexes??? I know there's a medical name for it, but I can't think of it...
thanks, very comprehensive site, yet it still doesn't have my answer.
We have one of these reflex hammers at the museum and I cataloged it into our PastPerfect software, which is equiped with a Revised Nomenclature for Museum Cataloging, which is like a uniformed list that most museums use for naming objects. But for some reason, Reflex Hammer, Reflex Mallet, etc is not on this list, which is weird because there are like 10000 objects on this list, except reflex hammer. So I was thinking that it was called something else...
they do have "dental hammer" on the list....but that must be something completely different. Why would dentists use a reflex hammer??
well, the software allows me to add object names to the lexicon, so perhaps i'll just do that.
considering I'm a librarian in a little over a day, this kind of thing DOES interest me. I mean, museums and libraries are a lot alike. I will look more into reflex hammers and see if I can find a better answer. Anyway, I suggest going to http://authorities.loc.gov which gives the "authorized headings" of the library of congress, and searching some of the names of the hammer that I gave you before. But, you could also just add the object name to the lexicon...it's up to you.
As far as I know, I'm almost 100% certain it's called a reflex hammer. Just to double check, I did a Google search for images and it appears to be correct. I also got results for antique reflex hammers, probably like the one at the museum. I guess if I were you I'd just add the name in.
P.S. I'm very sad about this, but I won't be coming back to DCHS this summer :(
