Pleasant day

Today I had CGod's car so I could take it in for an oil change, and it was just such a beautiful day that I couldn't stay inside. Once the oil change was done, I decided to head a few towns over to a yarn shop my sister-in-law told me about ( Read more... )

Wow, is there actually a significant "Support Your Local Shepherd" movement amongst knitters?

Me mum spins as a hobby, and I do own a few sweaters whose, err, donors, I guess, I could introduce you to, but I always figured she was just a nutjob. :)

OOOH. I don't know if it could be called a movement, but I know several knitters who like to support small farms and stuff. If your mum has yarn she's willing to part with, I will be happy to make an arrangement. ;)

I prefer handspun yarn to machine-spun. It has a completely different texture. I would like to spin my own someday, but I can't justify the purchase of a wheel, and I don't know anyone who can teach me how to use a hand spindle. Yet. :)

As far as whether or not she's a nutjob, well, I don't know her, so that's your call. :) But I really would love to discuss purchasing from her.

I don't know if she actually produces enough to be worth selling--the family joke is that if she gets started in January, we'll all have sweaters in time for Christmas--but I'll certainly run it by her. She has merlowe (sp?) sheep and makes the big puffy white stuff traditionally found in Irish cableknits, if that helps.

I'm not sure but you might be able to learn how to use the hand spindle from someone over at Sturbridge Village.
I remember class trips there that they taught us that sort of stuff there.
Also, My SIL also got wool from locals to use in her knitting. I could find out who her supplier is if you like.

Oh Fun - I didnt realize that the Agway in Rockville had Yarn - - - VERY interesting. I love mohair and handspun yarn!!! Both my mom and grandmother had spinning wheels and could spin but I couldn't crochet then and now I can and we haven't any sheep (or the wheels as of a year or two ago, come to think of it.) I wonder how the spindle would work.. Oh and where is the yarn shop? Ellington? (using my deductive reasoning here..) Sounds like a lot of fun!!! Can't knit (yet) but I Love to crochet!

the Agway is in Ellington; the yarn shop was in Rockville on Rt 31. :)

AWWW no more spinning wheels?? I really need to find one, and preferably one that WON'T cost me $300. O_o

Yikes $300.. Ugh.

Of course.. Silly me - I was thinking of the town with only three roads, lol! I get that area all confused. Which is sad I used to live in Rockville a while and drive that route to East Long Meadow when I worked there.

Suprised I don't know the yarn shop. But it sounds like the Agway is more my speed anyway.. :)

I figured it was Ellington you where talking about. I have a friend that has a great little shop there.
Thistleglass Crafts over on Maple Street.
She's a Reiki Master.
She also has a rock Labrynth set up in front of the shop.
