I think the fat men are the 7 Gods of Luck. Usually you can see them on a ship. I know one usually has a fish in his hand, and so on.

Beautiful photos! ^^ Some of the buildings do look vaguely, oddly European. They're lovely, and of course I love seeing photos of shrines.

Carp flags for Golden Week~ I thought they were used for Children's Day....? Or does Children's Day fall during Golden Week? (Clearly I'm not knowledgeable about Japanese holidays... XDD;)

Japan is not only anime/manga, samurai and ninja plus sushi - a lot of people tend to forget that.

You're so right about it!
People usually forget about art, culture and natural beauties. I made a simple video to use in my class about the four seasons and I used images of Japan in each one. The kid's never thought Japan was so beautiful! They were impressed! And I was a proud teacher! ^^v
