Canon versus Non-Canon Shipping

May 27, 2009 21:30

While looking over people's shipping lists, I've noticed that some people strongly prefer canon ships and others like a mixture of canon and non-canon ships. I suppose some might be mainly non-canon shippers, but I didn't see any lists like that while reading my flist. Personally I'm happy to ship canon (Doctor/Rose, Buffy/Spike, Kara/Anders), ( Read more... )

I like a bit of all of them, but I think I like non-canon ones most. I like the subtexty ones, like Angel/Wes and I like totally non-canon pairings like Wes/Faith and Giles/Dawn (yes, Giles/Dawn). I shipped Buffy/Spike for a long time and I also like Wes/Lilah.

I don't know about OTPs being mainly canon. I know a lot of OTP'ers who like the subtexty or non-canon variety.

Mmmmm...Angel/Wes and Wes/Lilah (those two were damn hot). I prefer Spike/Dawn, but why not Giles/Dawn! I have no problem with that.

I think it's that I'm mainly surrounded by het, canon, OTP shippers. Slashers, however, would tend to go for the subtexty relationships in their OTPs. Non-canon ships tend to have rather small followings in general, so it's harder to find OTPers of those ships.

Oh, I like Spike/Dawn too, and Wes/Dawn, especially dark, messed-up Wes with Dawn. Wesley is my favorite Jossverse character but I simply can't ship Wes/Fred, even though I love Fred.

Wes became my favorite character on Angel once he started losing it. I adored him in seasons 3 and 4 (and season 5 once the memory changes started to crack). Wes/Fred didn't thrill me either (not from any dislike of Fred). However, Wes/Illyria worked for me.

Alot of my ships are slash so I can't really go by canon for many of them (unless it's like Queer as Folk or something.)

This makes sense! Slash ships are unlikely to be canon but there can be tons of subtext to work with. And those ships are often hugely important and central to the show.

With the possible exceptions of Jack and Liz on 30 Rock (there's a biiiiit of UST but if they ever get together, I think it'd basically be 30 Rock's shark-jumping) and Jack and Gwen on Torchwood (come the fuck on, she's happily married now and he'll do anything that moves), I tend to gravitate towards the obvious canon ships. Ten and Rose, Jim and Pam on The Office, Josh and Donna on The West Wing...hell, even Jon and Stephen on The Daily Show/Colbert Report has been strongly hinted at before (there's one super good pic featuring Jon staring dreamily in the background at Stephen). So I seem to go to the most obvious pairings ever and then feel vindicated for some reason when they get together.

Oh, well, in Harry Potter, I did kinda like Harry and Hermione. But I wasn't crazy about it.

Yep, I'd say that Cobert/Stewart is pretty much canon. *g* Nothing wrong with being a canon shipper. Not everyone is into digging out the subtext in non-canon ships.

I'm a total stereotype. When I do ship, which is rare for me, I go all the way with canon OTPing. I think the only ships I've really shipped superduper hard have been Doctor/Rose and Mulder/Scully. Most all other ships I can take or leave, though a few do kind of really actively turn me off. But mostly I just roll with it. When do I ship, though, I ship like a stereotypical girly-girl fangirl. *points to icon*

That's the thing with shipping. What gets to you is not something that you can control. If a ship hits you just right, it does and that's it. I wonder if OTPers tend to have few ships in general (not just on a particular show).

I do. There are quite a lot of pairings I like, but there are only a few that I'm really involved in.

I'm a canon and an OTP shipper. There is usually only one pairing in a show that I'm involved in (sometimes two, but usually not involving the same people).

It takes a lot of energy to be strongly involved in a ship so it makes sense that you'd have few of them. I have few characters I OTC, but, since I don't invest heavily into the ships but rather the character, I can have several ships for each OTC.

*pats you* No value judgments here! I love all kinds of shippers. *g* And let's not forget Ten/Ten if you're feeling dull.
