He knew something was wrong. He could see it in her eyes. She wasn't just tired. She was upset. Maybe even scared. And he knew her well enough to know she didn't frighten easily. He moved around to the driver's seat and climbed in, looking over at her as she sat still and silent in the passenger seat. "What's wrong?"
"We got the story," Chloe told him, looking down then back at him, she knew he could tell something was wrong and she'd kept him in the dark long enough, "but we can't publish it."
"Because they caught us, proved us right and had us leave without any evidence," she told him, arching her eyebrows. She knew he knew what they had been looking into so she guessed that would be enough for him to understand.
Chloe glanced at him again. She didn't like this stilled conversation between them, but she wasn't feeling well about the whole situation either, so this was better than arguing, "maybe she should switch to decaf too, it might make her less anxious."
"I agree, but I doubt she'll go for that." He glanced at her sideways, then exhaled slowly, facing forward once more. "Are you hungry? I made a lasagna."
She winced a little at the thought of food and her stomach turned more. "Flying made me really nauseous so it will probably be a while before I can eat anything, but thank you for making it."
