Nah... It's essentially like watching Angel without having first watched BtVS, which I muddled through just fine. The history of the swooshy-coated, hair-gelled immortal guy makes more sense when you watch the original show later and find out about his Big Doomed Romance, but the spin-off is still enjoyable without knowing about that at the outset. *suddenly boggles at the parallels*
PS - As with Merlin, British seasons are short, yo. You wouldn't have a ton of catching up to do either way. *lures*
Heh, well, that's how I watched Angel, so I guess I'll have the familiar feeling of: Hey, it really seems like there might be some background here that I'm missing, but doesn't make this any less fun to watch. :)
I saw that! And there's only...3 seasons...and some Declassified episodes? Whatever those are. :)
Ah! The 'Declassified' are just little behind-the-scenes and interviews-with-the-actors things they do after every episode... I haven't watched the majority of them, but they're just a fun little bonus. :) (And the third 'season' was actually only a little five-episode story for which FG will never, ever forgive them, I suspect, so not even a full 13-ep season there.)
Do I need to have watched Doctor Who in order to 'get' Torchwood?
I don't think so? Some of the Doctor Who characters do pop up in the series, but only for a few episodes and mainly you just know they've met Captain Jack previously. Jack's really the only main character that was also a semi-regular on Doctor Who.
Other than that, you find out about the rift that Torchwood is built over in Doctor Who, but I think they mention that more than once in the series.
It's a lot... darker, grittier, nakeder than Doctor Who, but it also airs in the later timeslot.
